A Guide to Wall Mirrors

Posted by Eric Morgan on 11th Mar 2014

Wall mirrors serve several different purposes. They can adorn vanities, walls and even reflect light, which helps rooms appear brighter and more luminous. Available in endless shapes and sizes, mirror frames are made from metal, wood, plastic and some are even frameless.

Mirrors are used for several different purposes. Whether it's using mirrors in bathrooms for hair and makeup routines, having a decorative mirror adorn a living room wall or using a full-length mirror to check clothing, mirrors serve a household function.

Vanities - The most common use for mirrors are over vanities. These are used for shaving, makeup and checking one's overall appearance. Wall mirrors are most commonly located in bedrooms, bathrooms and closets. Often large in size, these mirrors generally reflect from the chest or shoulders upward, while full-length mirrors reflect from head to toe. The latter are especially useful for checking outfits and helping people get dressed.

Room Size - Smaller rooms benefit from mirrors, as they create the illusion of additional space. While it's nothing more than a figment of the imagination, mirrors help dark spaces feel more comfortable and roomy. In rooms without windows, a common decorating trick is to hang a mirror with curtains around it, giving people the first impression that it's a window. For small rooms that have windows, hanging wall mirrors across from windows helps to reflect light, making rooms appear larger.

Brightening - Mirrors have a brightening effect. Cost-efficient, mirrors add light without the expense of electricity.

Decorative - Some mirrors serve decorative purposes. Vintage mirrors are often more ornate and come in a variety of shapes that range from oval mirrors and round mirrors to rectangular mirrors. Available in an array of styles, decorative mirrors can be matched with existing decor for a custom, upscale appearance.

The location of a mirror is also important. Mirrors are fragile and heavy, which is why it's important that mirrors be installed correctly.

Weight - Mirrors should be weighed and appropriate mounting hardware based on weight should be selected. This will help prevent mirrors from falling and breaking.

Without Frames - Mirrors without frames generally require mirror clips, which screw into the wall and help support the edges of the mirror. Heavy mirrors should be placed into wall studs for extra support.

Frames - Mirrors with frames are easily hung with d-ring hangers or often come with mirror wires that attach to the back of the mirror. If no wall studs are available in the desired hanging location, then molly bolts should be installed for additional support.

Wall mirrors are a superb addition to any house. Some mimic beautiful pieces of art and others are designed purely for function.
